Marvel may be winning the big screen battle against DC, but DC has trumped its rival on TV on one battlefront at least. Both comics giants have been developing sitcoms based in their comics universe, but DC’s Powerless had beaten Marvel’s Damage Control to the green light.
US channel NBC has commissioned a series of the half-hour workplace comedy Powerless, which stars Vanessa Hudgens and fan faves Alan Tudyk (Firefly) and Dani Pudi (Community). It will premiere in the 2016-17 season in the States.
The show centres on Emily (Hudgens), a spunky young insurance adjuster specialising in coverage against damage caused by the crime-fighting superheroes. When she stands up to one of heroes (after an epic battle messes with her commute) she accidentally becomes a cult “hero” in her own right … even if it’s just to her group of lovably quirky co-workers. Now, while she navigates her normal, everyday life against an explosive backdrop, Emily discovers that being a hero doesn’t always require superpowers.
Ben Queen (A to Z) is lead writer and executive producer.
Marvel’s Damage Control, about the team who clean up after the damage caused by superheroes, remains in development.
