Good things come to those who wait… and while we’ve waited a very long time for Samurai Jack, Dexter’s Laboratory, Clone Wars and Hotel Transylvania creator Genndy Tartakovsky’s Luke Cage comic it looks like it’s going to very good indeed. Well, if the stunning cover and preview art are anything to judge by, at least. You try tell us you don’t want that cover on a T-shirt and we won’t believe you. Tartakovsky began working on Cage in 2007, but stipulated that it couldn’t be published until he’d completed all the art himself. Then other projects got in the way, his editorial contact at Marvel left and the project languished.
But, he tells Birth.Movies.Death, “I was doing press for Hotel Transylvania 2 and coincidently I found my thumbnails around the same time and thought that they still held up. Then on the press tour I kept getting questions about it so I thought for fun I would say, ‘I’m willing to finish it if Marvel is still interested.’ Sure enough it spread through the internet and the editor from Marvel contacted me.”
Of course, with a Luke Cage TV series coming up on Netflix later in the year, the timing could not be more perfect.
Cage is set in the ’70s, and Tartakovsky says that other ’70s versions of Marvel heroes will appear.
Here’s Marvel’s official synopsis for the premiere issue which will be published in October:
