Universal is, as expected, adding Frankenstein’s monster to the shared cinematic monsterverse that will be kicking off with the Tom Cruise-starring The Mummy, and according to Variety, the man who Universal wants to play him is Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men, Skyfall).
Javier is apparently in final negotiations to join a shared monsterverse roster that also includes Jekyll & Hyde (confirmed to be played by Russell Crowe), the Wolf Man (Dwayne Johnson rumoured), The Invisible Man (Johnny Depp rumoured) and the currently filming The Mummy (see here).
It is not yet clear when Frankenstein’s monster would first appear in the shared monsterverse. Universal has scheduled in two unspecified films in the series for April 2018 and February 2019, so he could debut in one of those. On the other hand, maybe he’ll cameo in The Mummy.
The first fully-fledged Frankenstein film is rumoured to be an update of Bride Of Frankenstein. If and when that is confirmed expect the “cast Gwendoline Christie!” campaigns to spring up.
