BBC America has released the first image from its new eight-part series based on Douglas Adams’s Dirk Gently books. It shows Samuel Barnett (Penny Dreadful, Desperate Romantics, Strange) as Dirk and Elijah Wood as Todd, a character created for the show who apparently insists that he is not a sidekick. “He’s honestly not gung-ho about helping Dirk do anything, much less be his assistant,” says series writer Max Landis (Chronicle, Victor Frankenstein) of the character.
The show isn’t a straight adaptation of either Dirk Gently book – Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency (1987) and The Long, Dark Tea-Time Of The Soul (1988) – but instead creates a new season-long mystery for Dirk, a detective who solves cases by seeing the interconnectedness of all things.
Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest) is directing at least two episodes of the series, and the show will debut in the States on 22 October.
