After a month or so of rumours (sparked off by this story about some teaser art that appeared on a San Diego Comic-Con tram) it has now been confirmed: supernatural flaming-skulled speed demon Ghost Rider will be joining Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD in season four.
Marvel Entertainment has revealed that Gabriel Luna (Matador, True Detective) will play the role of Robbie Reyes, the most recent incarnation of the character.
“Season four will unquestionably be the series’ biggest, most ambitious story yet, and it all begins with the introduction of one of our greatest legacy characters in Ghost Rider,” says executive producer/head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. “When the Spirit Of Vengeance rides into SHIELD, it’ll change everything.”
The original Ghost Rider, a motorcycle stuntman called Johnny Blaze whose soul became bonded to a demonic force, first appeared in Marvel Spotlight #5 (1972). He was a stuntman. The new Ghost Rider, Robbie Reyes, made his debut in All-New Ghost Rider #1 (2014) as a young mechanic living in Los Angeles who is possessed by the Spirit Of Vengeance which he uses against the local gangs and to win street races.
