A while back, directors the Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony, revealed that Avengers: Infinity Wars Part 1 and Avengers: Infinity Wars Part 2 were only temporary titles, and would be changing (see here).
Well, now that title of the first of the films has been confirmed… and it’s not so much a change as an edit: Avengers: Infinity Wars. The second film is now currently being listed as “Untitled Avengers Film”.
Their respective release dates of April 2018 and April 2019 (in the UK) have not been altered.
This does all make sense. The Russos said that the reason the films would eventually NOT be named “Part 1” and “Part 2” was so that the general movie-going audience didn’t think they would be getting only half a story when going to see either one. So keeping the title “Infinity Wars” for the first film then giving the second one another name (Avengers: Kicking Thanos’s Ass, for instance) makes them feel more separate entities.
The films are widely rumoured to be based on the Marvel Comics event series “Infinity Gauntlet” (1990-1991) but we’d be surprised if the word “gauntlet” made its way into a blockbuster film title.
