Once more with superpowers… the showrunners on the CW’s Arrowverse shows have just confirmed at the Television Critics Association Fall Preview that there will be a musical crossover between The Flash and Supergirl next season.
This is not part of the epic crossover between all four shows – The Flash, Supergirl, Arrow and DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow – that has previously been announced; it will happen later in the season.
“We have a number of people across all of the shows who can sing and will be making an appearance in that,” said big Arrowverse boss Greg Berlanti. The songs will mostly be pre-existing songs – so it’s a bit of a juke box musical – though there are plans to write one new song each for both The Flash episode and the Supergirl episode.
As for those people who can sing… well both The Flash star Grant Gustin and Supergirl star Melissa Benoist appeared and sang on Glee. “I met Grant and Melissa on Glee together,” said Supergirl’s Ali Adler. “When they’re not flying or punching, they’re singing on set. It’s amazing.”
We’ve already heard Jesse L Martin singing in The Flash and he’s appeared in the Broadway musical Rent. And John Barrowman has a new contract which means he can appear across all four shows on demand, and it’s bloody near impossible to stop him singing; he’s probably begging for a part right now.
Meanwhile Arrow has a coup of its own: the legendary Dolph Lundgren (Rocky IV, Universal Soldier) will be guest starring as a villain in some Russian-set flashbacks.
In addition, one character on one of the four shows will come out as gay. “One of the characters on one of the shows is going to explore their sexuality and coming out,” said Andrew Kreisberg, an exec producer on all four shows.

In a related story, the CW has also revealed that the lead character in its new animated Arrowverse show for CW Seed, Freedom Fighters: The Ray, will also be gay – the first homosexual headlining character in a superhero TV show of any sort. [via Coming Soon]
