Ages ago we reported a rumour that minor-league Marvel villain the Tinkerer could be appearing in Spider-Man: Homecoming, then we promptly forgot all about it. But it appears that rumour was true. Because now Deadline is reporting that Marvel has cast Michael Chernus (Orange Is the New Black, The Bourne Legacy) in the role.
The Tinkerer is Phineas Mason, who, in the Marvel comics universe, was introduced in the exact same issue of Amazing Spider-Man (#2, 1963), as the Vulture but in an entirely different, stand-alone back-up story. In the comics, Mason runs a shop designing gadgets and tech for supervillains and criminals behind the facade of a radio repair shop. He’s worked with Mysterio, Scorpion and Black Cat but never with Vulture in the comics. However, in Spider-Man: Homecoming Mason will apparently help the Vulture to create his wings.
Spider-Man: Homecoming, directed by Jon Watts and starring Tom Holland, is set for a UK release on 7 July 2017.
