When Gotham introduced Cameron Monaghan as Jerome back in season one, he was a huge and instant hit, and also clearly the future Joker. Or was he? Because after making an impression in the early episodes of season two, Jerome was unexpectedly killed off by Theo Galavan, live on TV. But the cult of Jerome lived on… as evidenced by a fantastic performance by one-time Tank Girl Lori Petty later in the season as a seriously creepy Jerome wannabe rock singer.
Now, it seems, the producers of Gotham are committed to bringing back Jerome. Not just another Jerome worshipper influenced by him to become the Joker, but the real Jerome. After all, Fish came back from the dead, so why not?
The only drawback is that it won’t happen until season four… and there’s no guarantee that there’ll even be a season four!
But the build-up will happen throughout season three.
Speaking to Zap2It.com, executive producer John Stephens says, “It is 100% our intention to bring Jerome back… We’re going to be playing it again this year and basically extending the idea of the cult of Jerome. We’re building the architecture for him to come back.
“You’ll have these underground movements that have started to talk about Jerome and what he represented and how he’s going to come back like in the days of John the Baptist,” Stephens continues. “Setting the stage that if there is a season four, hopefully we’ll bring that back in a much bigger way and you’ll see these different versions of the Joker myth.”
However, if and when Jerome does return, he may not be quite as we remember.
“He plays into the idea of transformation,” says Stephens. “When he comes back, you want to see that new version… That next step forward.”
But is Petty coming back as well, that’s what we want to know?!
