According to Variety, Legendary Entertainment and The Pokémon Company have signed up two writers for the live action Great Detective Pikachu movie that’s currently in development, and both of them are very exciting propositions: Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch and Guardians Of The Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman. What a team.
Gravity Falls is the cult Disney XD series that adults love to watch which was renowned for the diversity and inclusiveness of it characters. Guardians Of The Galaxy is the Marvel movie which made everybody cry over a tree with limited vocabulary.
The Detective Pikachu movie will be the first ever live action film based on the Pokémon franchise. Great Detective Pikachu is a spin-off game released in Japan which features a rare talking Pikachu who claims to be a great detective (we think he’s just a secret Cumberbitch). One day, Pikachu encounters a boy named Tim Goodman, who can understand what he’s saying. The two begin working together to solve various mysteries revolving around Pokémon in the city.
Universal Pictures will handle distribution of the live-action film outside Japan as it regularly does with Legendary’s other films. The Pokémon Company’s long time movie collaborator, Toho, will handle distribution of the film franchise in Japan, as it did in its partnership with Legendary on the US Godzilla.
