The Ring franchise is back… the American off-shoot of the franchise anyway. After The Ring (2002) remade the Japanese film Ringu (1998) Hollywood made its own sequel, The Ring Two (2005), and in-between even made the short Rings (2005) which was released as an extra on a special DVD rerelease of The Ring. Now, 11 years later, rather unexpectedly we get yet another sequel, also called Rings, which we don’t think is just a longer version of the short.
Anyway, Rings is directed by F Javier Gutiérrez and written by David Loucka, Jacob Aaron Estes and Akiva Goldsman. Here’s the official blurb:
“A new chapter in the beloved Ring horror franchise. A young woman becomes worried about her boyfriend when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it. She sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend and in doing so makes a horrifying discovery: there is a “movie within the movie” that no one has ever seen before…”
