Looks like Pitch Perfect star Anna Kendrick could get her wish to play Squirrel Girl, having recently told Net-a-Porter, “My brother sent me a Squirrel Girl comic because he thinks I should play her. I don’t know what Squirrel Girl does other than be half squirrel, but I could be half squirrel!”
Because, nuts as it may sound (sorry), the unlikely Marvel superhero – created in 1992 by Will Murray and Steve Ditko as a tongue-in-cheek reaction against the ultra-grim superhero antics of the time – could become the star of a New Warriors comedy series being developed by Marvel, reports TV Line.
The show, which is being described as a kind of junior Avengers, is apparently currently being shopped around various broadcasters.
In the Marvel comics world, Squirrel Girl, aka Doreen Green, was never actually a member of the New Warriors (though there were plans at one point to have her join it never happened). She was, however, a member of the Great Lakes Avengers – itself a “comedy” title featuring misfit superheroes such as Flatman, Doorman and Big Bertha. Now that’s a series we’d like to see.
