Following last year’s hugely successful global online unboxing session for the Star Wars Episode VII toy range, Disney and LucasFilm has come up with a new – brilliant – gimmick to launch its Rogue One: A Star Wars Story toys: a four-part, fan-made animation series called #GoRogue, which features over 40 new toys and over 20,000 LEGO bricks. The toys themselves hail from Hasbro, FUNKO, JAKKS Pacific, Mattel, LEGO and the Disney Store.
The rest of the three short films will be released throughout September on the YouTube Star Wars channel. The toys will go on sale on 30 September. Star Wars merchandise had generated around $5 billion worldwide in the last year.
#GoRogue will also be launching a global competition on 30 September, inviting fans to create their own animated shorts using the toys. Winning entries will be selected by a panel including Rogue One director Gareth Edwards. The first prize will be an invite to a screening of Rogue One alongside the winner’s short at Lucasfilm in San Francisco.
