It’s a beautiful morning out at London’s ExCeL Centre, where MyM Buzz has been invited to attend the filming of a mysterious trailer. The sun is shining but attendees to a Jehovah’s Witness convention at ExCeL are dressed to the nines. They’re still underdressed – and probably sweating less – compared to the two colossal, fully-armoured space marines who are carefully making their way towards the west entrance.
Sounds a bit like the start of a strange dream, doesn’t it? But no, it’s real, and in fact there’s a mass of costumed characters assembling, from a hippie stormtrooper to Fallout icons to a giant hammer-wielding Poppy from League of Legends to Negasonic Teenage Warrior. Of course, it’s par the course to see streams of cosplayers flood the Excel Centre during an MCM Comic Con, but there’s no Comic Con this weekend and the Jehovah’s Witnesses clearly don’t know quite what’s hit them!
So what is this? An eclectic new branch of the Avengers? A pop-up Comic Con? Close. These cosplayers are here to become the stars of Wildseed Movie’s new trailer, the enigmatically titled Comic Con’s Darkest Dawn, which will see the ExCeL Centre being terrorised by an alien invasion. The beginning of the month saw a callout from Wildseed Movies for 30 of MCM Comic Con’s most enthusiastic cosplayers to attend the filming, and lo, the call was answered.
Cosplayers from as far afield as Wales or Norwich showed up especially for the chance to show off their costumes on camera, or just to have a bit of fun and meet some other cosplayers!
So should we be expecting a Comic Con-based film to follow? Not exactly! Comic Con’s Darkest Dawn is an exclusive teaser trailer for a British sci-fi film, The Darkest Dawn, which will have its world premiere at the next October MCM London Comic Con. It’s the sequel to Wildseed’s earlier release, Hungerford (2014), which features parasitical zombies as a result of an alien invasion. Proper sci-fi! And a hit on the film festival circuit too.
Hungerford and The Darkest Dawn are the brainchildren of YouTubers Drew Casson and Jesse Cleverly, the former of whom is directing and filming the trailer this morning. Both films are feature an alien invasion, except The Darkest Dawn is turning things to up to 11; England is destroyed, aliens are causing the apocalypse, and humanity is fighting tooth and nail, leaving morals and ethics at the door in order to survive.
“Throughout the film, a girl is vlogging her way through the end of the world, occasionally popping back in and monologuing to the camera,” Casson explains.
The cast they’ve chosen will certainly have had a lot of experience in that respect: they’re all British YouTubers! Notably, Bethan Mary Leadley (@musicalbethan) and Cherry Wallis take the lead roles.
Wildseed considers the Comic Con audience its “family”; the sci-fi, comedy, fantasy – geeky! – spectrum of humanity who love diving into new things and embracing the attempts of individuals to stand out and create.
“We feel the Comic Con audience are some of the most open minded, friendly and forward-thinking people we’ve met,” the film’s PR rep Jess Roe told us. Not only does that all fit in with Wildseed Studios’ ethos of letting creators take the reins on their passion projects, but it’s the core reason they chose to use MCM Comic Con as a platform for The Darkest Dawn’s premiere.
And so we come full circle, back to the trailer being filmed today. Cosplayers, members of the very family Wildseed hold so dear, have flocked to help promote their new project, with the aim of enticing Comic Con attendees to their premiere with a small taste of the alien invasion to come.
BUZZ’ll being you the trailer as soon as it’s ready. In the meantime, he’s a “reaction” vid filmed at Summer In The City last month.
