DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns has told The Wall Street Journal that Joe Manganiello (Alcide the werewolf in True Blood, Magic Mike) will be playing Deathstroke in Ben Affleck’s solo Batman movie.
Affleck triggered a flurry of speculation after posting onto the internet a mysterious video of Deathstroke last week, and Manganiello’s name constantly came up in rumours.
Geoff Johns, however, would not confirm if Deathstroke would also have a cameo in the Justice League movie, which the timing of the video clip’s release would seem to imply (Justice League is in production while the Batman solo movie’s production start is still months away).
In the comics, Deathstroke was introduced 1980 in New Teen Titans #2. The character, whose real name is Slade Wilson, is an expert assassin with super strength and stamina. On TV he has been played by Manu Bennett on CW’s Arrow, but the producers on that show were apparently asked to stop using the character some time ago because DC had cinematic plans for the character (which is slightly odd as DC appears to have no problem with totally different versions of Superman appearing on the big and small screen at the same time).
Manganiello has had previous superhero movie form; he played the bully Flash Thompson in in Sam Raimi’s 2002 Spider-Man. His name was also in the frame for both Superman (for Man Of Steel) and Batman (for Batman V Superman) but it looks like Warners has finally found him something to play.
