Okay, this one’s freaky. The new trailer for HBO’s Westworld goes all Philip K Dick on us, with Anthony Hopkins’ character
Dr Robert Ford playing some serious mindgames with one of AI toys. Then Roy Orbison starts crooning “I Close My Eyes…” and all hell breaks loose. Despite all the behind-the-scenes traumas with production being halted, this has the all the makings of a seriously thought-provoking and visually stunning SF masterpiece. Of course, it could also be a load of pretentious twaddle with gratuitous sex (which reminds us… how come no one ever wants to remake Zardoz?) but showrunner Jonathan Nolan also created the magnificent Person Of Interest so we’re crossing fingers for the former.
Westworld is a new, modern twist on the classic 1973 sci-fi film about a robot revolt in a futuristic theme park (it was written and directed by Michael Crichton, famous for another Jurassic theme park where everything went wrong). The cast includes Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Jimmi Simpson, Rodrigo Santoro, Shannon Woodward, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Ben Barnes, Simon Quarterman, Angela Sarafyan, Luke Hemsworth and Clifton Collins, Jr.
The new Westworld TV series has been developed by Jonathan Nolan (Person Of Interest) and Lisa Joy. It will air in the UK on Sky Atlantic, date TBC.
