Channel 4 may have nabbed The Great British Bake Off, but they lost Black Mirror. Netflix will stream series three of Charlie Brooker’s often brilliant SF anthology series (premiering on 21 October) and Brooker himself has revealed to Entertainment Weekly the episode titles, plot synopses and a few guest stars for the six episodes.
“San Junipero” Back to the future? This one’s set in the ’80s and stars Mackenzie Davis and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as new arrivals in a beach town. Brooker describes it as a “coming-of-age drama with a Black Mirror undertow.”
“Shut Up and Dance” centres on a withdrawn 19-year-old (Alex Lawther) who falls into an online trap and an “uneasy alliance” with another man (Jerome Flynn). They are both at the mercy of another player in the “kitchen sink nightmarish thriller.”
“Nosedive” stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Alice Eve in a world where all social interaction is rated. Howard’s character tries to figure out a way to rank as highly as Eve, and that’s when things go screwy.
“Men Against Fire” is set in a post-war future, and spotlights two soldiers, played by Malachi Kirby and Madeline Brewer, who are tasked with protecting a town from “vicious, feral mutants”. Apparently this’ll inject a techy twist to a Walking Dead scenario.
“Playest” tackles the world of video games. A thrill-seeker played by Wyatt Russell meets a woman played by Hannah John-Kamen, who introduces him to a “mind-bending” device that’s both sophisticated and terrifying. It’s directed by Dan Trachtenberg of 10 Cloverfield Lane fame. “Dan is fantastic at creating suspenseful and tense mood; this is our Evil Dead 2,” says Brooker
“Hated in the Nation” A 90-minute episode inspired by Scandi Noir. A detective (Kelly McDonald) investigate grisly murders linked to social media. “It deals with online rage,” says Brooker. “It starts out like a stylish standard police procedural, then takes a bizarre turn.” Like we ever doubted it.
