Watchmen and Preacher star Jackie Earle Haley is set to play a “monstrous cyborg” in the live action US film version of classic manga and anime series Battle Angel Alita (to be cunningly retitled Alita: Battle Angel), according to The Hollywood Reporter.
There are no further details of the character, except that it will involve a CG component.
Haley joins an a cast that also includes Rosa Salazar in the title role and Christoph Waltz as Doctor Dyson.
Alita is a 26th century amnesiac female cyborg rescued from a scrapyard by Doctor Dyson. After he rebuilds her, the only memories she retains are martial art training so she becomes a hunter-warrior, tracking down and eliminating vicious criminals. As well as featuring kick-ass bounty hunting action the new film will also be a story of self-discovery and finding love for Alita.
The manga series was created by Yukito Kishiro in 1990.
James Cameron (who has been developing the project for yonks) will produce while Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, From Dusk Till Dawn) is directing. Production is set to begin on the film in Austin this October.
