Here’s new trailer for BBC America’s clearly very, very loose adaptation of Douglas Adams’s Dirk Gently novels, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. The fact that it appears to bear little resemblance to the source material need not necessarily be a bad thing, but we’re not sure the trailers actually get across to the uninitiated what the concept behind the show is – it just looks at the moment like a couple of geeks playing at detecting.
The new series stars Samuel Barnett (Penny Dreadful, Desperate Romantics, Strange) as Dirk and Elijah Wood (you know him) as Todd, a character created for the show who apparently insists that he is not a sidekick. “He’s honestly not gung-ho about helping Dirk do anything, much less be his assistant,” says series writer Max Landis (Chronicle, Victor Frankenstein) of the character.
The first season features one big mystery across its eight episodes, rather than being a case-of-the-week affair. The first two episodes are directed by Galaxy Quest’s Dean Parisot, which is good news. The show will be available in Netflix in the UK.
