“Are you real?” “Well, if you can’t tell, does it matter?” is a crucial exchange in the latest trailer for HBO’s Westworld, and that seems to be the underlying theme of this remake. Whereas the original 1973 film was like a dress rehearsal for Jurassic Park but with androids rather than dinosaurs slaughtering tourists at a theme park (Michael Crichton regurgitating ideas? Never!) this new version seems to owe more to Philip K Dick. Especially when you hear showrunner Jonathan Nolan (Person Of Interest) say in the new featurette: “If the simulation is immersive enough, would you start discovering things about yourself that you didn’t wanna know?”
Westworld is a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin. Set at the intersection of the near future and the reimagined past, it explores a world in which every human appetite, no matter how noble or depraved, can be indulged.
The 10-part series is executive produced, co-written and directed by Jonathan Nolan, executive produced and co-written by Lisa Joy, and executive produced by JJ Abrams, Jerry Weintraub, Bryan Burk. The cast includes Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright and Tessa Thompson.
Westworld premieres in the UK on Sky Atlantic on 4 October.
