Keean Johnson (Nashville, The Fosters) has been cast as the love interest in the upcoming Hollywood, live action Alita: Battle Angel. He will play Hugo, a young man who teaches the cyborg star of the movie Alita (Rosa Salazar) how to play a gladiator-style game called Motorball.
The cast also currently includes Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained, Spectre) as Doctor Dyson, the man who discovers the amnesiac Alita; Jackie Earl Haley (Watchmen, Preacher) in an undisclosed role; and Ed Skrein (Deadpool) as the villain cyborg Zapan.
Set in the 26th century, Alita: Battle Angel is based on the manga by Yukito Kishiro. It tells the story of Alita, a female cyborg who is rescued from a scrapyard by Dyson. The rebuilt Alita, remembering only her battle training, becomes a hunter-warrior, tracking down and eliminating vicious criminals. But she has time for love and Motorball too.
Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) is directing, with James Cameron producing.
