Mahershala Ali (who played Cottonmouth in Marvel’s Luke Cage, and who we also used to love in The 4400 – remember that?) has landed a role in the James Cameron-produced, Robert Rodriguez-directed Alita: Batttle Angel.
He will play a bad guy called Vector, who runs and fixes matches for a gladiator-style game called Motorball that cyborg Alita (Rosa Salazar) becomes involved in.
The cast also currently includes Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained, Spectre) as Doctor Dyson, the man who discovers the amnesiac Alita; Jackie Earl Haley (Watchmen, Preacher) in an undisclosed role; Ed Skrein (Deadpool) as the villain cyborg Zapan; and Keean Johnson (Nashville) as Hugo, who coaches Alita in Motorball and falls in love with her.
Set in the 26th century, Alita: Battle Angel is based on the manga by Yukito Kishiro. It tells the story of Alita, a female cyborg who is rescued from a scrapyard by Dyson. The rebuilt Alita, remembering only her battle training, becomes a hunter-warrior, tracking down and eliminating vicious criminals. But she has time for love and Motorball too.
