We did start out headlining this story, “New Starship Troopers Movie On The Way” but realised that might have made it sound like another one of those cheapie straight-to-DVD cash-ins was on the way. But that isn’t what this seems to be. According to The Hollywood Reporter this latest reboot from Columbia Pictures is a proper remake that goes back to the original Robert Heinlein novel for its inspiration (but the teams behind remakes based on books always say that…!)
Columbia as hired writers Mark Swift and Damian Shannon to pen a first draft of the script. Their CV includes Freddy vs. Jason (2003) and the Friday the 13th reboot (2009) as well as the upcoming movie version of Baywatch. Interesting mix…!
Director Paul Verhoeven (RoboCop) made the infamous 1997 version of Starship Troopers, in which Earth goes to war with giant alien insects, which split people into three camps: those who thought it was right-wing pro-militarist propaganda; those who thought it was a subtle parody of right-wing pro-militarist propaganda; and those who went “Giant alien insect gore and spaceships! Coooooweeeelllll!”
“For the record, we think Verhoeven’s version is amazing and we aren’t trying to redo it,” the pair wrote on Twitter. “Will talk more about it soon, but we’re excited!”
