So here it, the official teaser trailer for Luc Besson lavish space opera Velerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets. First thought – it looks very The Fifth Element. No surprise there then. Second thought – some of the aliens looks very cartoony, but that probably has more to do with what Besson finds aesthetically pleasing than the FX guys. Third thought – if, as Valerian says, he and Lauerline are a team… WHY THE HELL HAS HER NAME BEEN DROPPED FROM THE TITLE??? Especially as Cara Delevingne looks great as Laureline.
The song, by the way, is a cover of “Because” by the Beatles, which is apparently the first time a song by The Beatles has ever been licensed for use in a trailer.
Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.
Written and directed by Luc Besson, Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets also stars Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, John Goodman, Herbie Hancock and Kris Wu. It is set for a UK release on 21 July 2017.
