Syfy’s The Magicians was one of those shows everyone expected to be awful but turned into an unexpected success. At first glance it looks like nothing more than Harry Potter goes to university, with bits of Miss Peregrine’s School For Peculiar Children and Professor Xavier’s School For Gifted Youngsters thrown in for good measure. But like MTV’s Teen Wolf, somehow the series rose above all its clichés and delivered an entertaining ride for season one. Now Syfy has announced the US premiere date for season two – 25 January – and released a new trailer, which you can watch below.
The Magicians, based on the novels by Lev Grossman, concerns Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph) and his 20-something friends as they discover their magical abilities at Brakebills University, a secret grad school specialising in magic. While there, they come to the realisation that the fantasies they read about as children are all too real, and unwittingly invite a malevolent entity from the other side into their lives. Heading into season two, this group of unlikely heroes have been thrust into even more dangerous and unfamiliar territory, and must draw upon their novice skills to defeat a threat that could destroy the magical world itself.
