Scriptwriter Christina Hodson has just nabbed not one but two major genre movie gigs: she’ll be writing both the Transformers spin-off Bumblebee movie, and a Birds Of Prey movie, that will bring together a whole bunch of DC’s female characters, including Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in a key role.
According to Deadline, Hodson was a late addition to the “writers room” that director Michael Bay assembled to flesh out the future of the Transformers screen franchise, but she quickly nailed a way to shape the Bumblebee spin-off. Paramount is apparently very keen on her treatment and is looking for a director for a June 2018 release.
Meanwhile, The Wrap has the news that Hodson will write the Birds Of Prey movie. This is a pet project for Margot Robbie, who will also act as a producer. Robbie apparently became keen on the idea after discovering all the great female characters DC had to offer while researching her role as Harley Quinn for Suicide Squad.
Hodson’s star is certainly on the rise. Half-Asian and raised in London, she started as a development executive and switched to screenwriting four years ago. She has written the thriller Shut In directed by Farren Blackburn (Doctor Who, The Fades, Daredevil) which is released in the States this month, and also the Denise Di Novi-directed Unforgettable with Rosario Dawson, Katherine Heigl, and Whitney Cummings, which will be released next year.
