CBS has now confirmed rumours that Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) has been cast in Star Trek: Discovery, along with announcing two more actors and their characters for the new series.
Yeoh will be playing Captain Georgiou of the Starship Shenzhou. “Shenzou” is a Chinese word meaning “Divine Craft” that has also been given to China’s current space program.
Meanwhile, Doug Jones (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy) will star as Lt Saru, a Starfleet Science Officer from an alien species new Trek, while Anthony Rapp (Rent, A Beautiful Mind) will star as Lt Stamets, an astromycologist (space fungus expert – seems like peculiarly specialised role), and Starfleet Science Officer aboard the Discovery.
Star Trek: Discovery will premiere on CBS next May, before moving to CBS’s streaming service CBS All Access. Each episode will be available globally within 24 hours of its US premiere through Netflix in 188 countries and through Bell Media in Canada. Star Trek: Discovery is executive produced by Bryan Fuller with Gretchen Berg, Aaron Harberts and Academy Award winner Akiva Goldsman running the ship.
