Legendary Entertainment has announced who’ll be directing the live-action version of Nintendo’s live-action Detective Pikachu movie. It’s Rob Letterman, the director behind Monsters Vs Aliens, Shark Tale and the live-action Goosebumps.
The Detective Pikachu movie will be the first ever live-action film based on the Pokémon franchise. Great Detective Pikachu is a spin-off game released in Japan which features a rare talking Pikachu who claims to be a great detective (we think he’s just a secret Cumberbitch). One day, Pikachu encounters a boy named Tim Goodman, who can understand what he’s saying. The two begin working together to solve various mysteries revolving around Pokémon in the city.
Universal Pictures will handle distribution of the live-action film outside Japan as it regularly does with Legendary’s other films. The Pokémon Company’s long time movie collaborator, Toho, will handle distribution of the film franchise in Japan, as it did in its partnership with Legendary on the US Godzilla.
