For a while this may look like an extended clip from the new Tom Cruise-starring blockbuster The Mummy, but it eventually settles into become a real trailer. It also gives us our first look at Russell Crowe as Dr Henry Jekyll, who, if Universal’s plans work out (ie, The Mummy is a hit), will be turning up in other films set in a shared Universal Monsters cinematic universe. Other planned films include ones featuring the Wolfman, the Invisible Man, the Bride of Frankenstein and Van Helsing.
The Mummy is set for a UK release on 9 June 2017.
From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy ushers in a new world of gods and monsters. Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (played by Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond fame) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in the present, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.
The film stars Tom Cruise, Annabelle Wallis (King Arthur, Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B Vance (American Crime Story: The People V OJ Simpson) and Russell Crowe (Gladiator). It’s directed by Alex Kurtzman from a script by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Doctor Strange) and Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Edge Of Tomorrow).
