Current Ultimate Fight Championship (UFC) lightweight champion and notorious motormouth Conor McGregor has nabbed himself a part in Game Of Thrones and it appears he may have been cast against type, if Thrones news site Watchers On The Wall is to be believed.
That doesn’t mean his mixed martial arts skills won’t be put to use; they probably will be. But apparently he’s been cast as a crewmember on Euron Greyjoy’s ship, the Silence, which is named that for a very good reason: Euron has cut all of his crews’ tongues out (Balon Greyjoy made note of this particular hobby of Euron’s back in 6.02 “Home” just before Euron threw him off a bridge). So it sounds like McGregor won’t be able to talk which may be the most extreme stretch of his acting talents.
Game Of Thrones showrunner David Benioff and Dan Weiss are well-known UFC fans, and McGregor is currently on a break from fighting so that presumably how he’s ended up on the show, though it’s possible his appearance may just be a cameo – brought in for one specific fight scene, perhaps? We just love the fact that his mum didn’t stop at sewing name tags into his school kit, but got her son tattooed with his name as well. Maybe he gets lost a lot?
The news also suggests that the Euron plot will have a bigger role to play in the last two seasons, after Euron was introduced with a bang at the start of season six, then largely ignored after that.
