Battlestar Galactica’s Baltar actor James Callis has been cast as a key recurring character in season three of twisty time-travel show 12 Monkeys.
According to exec producer Terry Matalas speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Callis will play, “a highly anticipated and pivotal new character to our series’ mythology.”
Although currently unnamed, the character is described as a “rebellious and enigmatic time-traveler raised throughout history by the Army Of The 12 Monkeys, one whose conflicted personal and emotional path will change everything for James Cole (Aaron Stanford) and Dr Cassandra Railly (Amanda Schull).”
According to Syfy (season two finale spoilers in this paragraph), Cole and Railly will spend season three on desperate search across time to find the man responsible for the apocalypse, a time traveler who calls himself the Witness (season two ended with a scene set in 2163, in which Railly is brought before an assembly of the Army where The Pallid Man greets her as the mother of The Witness…!) Killing the Witness will mean saving the world, but the journey will come at tremendous personal stakes for the two and will call into question new alliances, old bonds, and the virtue of the mission itself. So as Entertainment Weekly speculates, it does seem likely that Callis could be playing the Witness.
Back To The Future’s Christopher Lloyd was also recently confirmed as having been added to the cast of 12 Monkeys season three. He will play Zalmon Shaw, a charming but deadly cult leader who preys upon others’ tragedies and losses in order to recruit new members into the apocalyptic cult the Army Of The 12 Monkeys. Shaw is apparently the father of the series’ ongoing villain, the Pallid Man.
