So here it is, Merry Christmas… no, not Slade but Blade. As in Blade Runner. The teaser trailer for Blade Runner 2049 is here, complete with the kind of film noir voiceover that became one of the most contentious elements of the original (it wasn’t part of the initial cut, but the studio forced Harrison Ford to record one because they thought the audience wouldn’t know what was going on otherwise; some viewers loathe it as unnecessary, others think it’s actually part of the film’s charm). Interesting – perhaps deliberately provocative – choice?
The trailer certainly seems to capture the visual tone and mood of the original; not just the gritty cityscapes but the sudden contrast with old world opulence. And we get Harrison Ford, boasting his talents.
It’d difficult to tell from this if the final film will be any good but it certainly teases…
Here’s the synopsis: “Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.”
Blade Runner 2049, directed by Denis Villeneuve (Arrival) and also starring Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Dave Bautista, Sylvia Hoeks, Ana de Armas, Carla Juri, David Dastmalchian, Barkhad Abdi, Lennie James and Jared Leto, opens in the UK on 6 October 2017.
