The fans have got their wish… sort of. Matt Ryan will return as DC supernatural investigator John Constantine, but only providing his voice for an animated series that’s being produced for the CW’s online platform, CW Seed. But hey, it’s better than nothing, guys.
Ryan played the lead in the NBC series Constantine for a single season that aired in 2014-15 and returned for a guest appearance in Arrow season four. He was by far the best thing about the NBC series, and won a faithful fan following for his gutsy performance despite the show itself never really fulfilling its potential.
He also previously voiced Constantine for an animated Justice League Dark DVD (see here).
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “the animated series will consist of five or six 10-minute episodes that will premiere during the 2017-18 TV season. On CW Seed, Constantine joins fellow animated DC comics series Vixen, which launched its second season in October.”
When asked on Sunday at the Television Critics Association press tour about whether Constantine could once again cross back over into the live action Arrowverse shows, CW president Mark Pedowitz said, “there are no plans to,” but added that he’d love to have Ryan back.
Wouldn’t we all!?
