Star Wars Episode VIII director Rian Johnson has hinted to USA Today that the film will open with a small but significant break with tradition. No, that doesn’t mean it’s dropping the opening crawl – we said small.
Instead, rather than the usual leap in time between Star Wars films, it seems that Episode VIII will begin by addressing what happens immediately after – or very soon after, at least – the ending of Episode VII, revealing what transpires on the island of Ahch-To after Rey met Luke.
“I don’t want to skip ahead two years, I want to see the very next moment of what happens,” says Johnson.
Rey and Luke’s relationship is a key aspect of Episode VIII, and the director adds that, “a large part of the movie” will explore what Luke is doing on Ahch-To as well as Rey’s mission moving forward. “Part of what’s she’s dealing with is the realisation that she has this power and this gift… She’s taking her first step to coming to terms with this thing inside her that she never knew was there and is just starting to reveal its potential.”
