BBC One has released a gallery of photos from the final episode of Sherlock series four, 4.03 “The Final Problem”. Not that they’re most revealing set promo images ever; there’s not even anybody in them outside of the regular cast (except for producer Sue Vertue and episode director Ben Caron in the one above, so that’s not giving much away). Will this be the final episode ever? Star Benedict Cumberbatch has referred to it as the “end of an era” but that doesn’t categorically state it’s the end, period. Steven Moffat has implied it’s more of a never say never situation but with both Martin Freeman and Cumberbatch increasingly getting film and Stateside TV offers you have to wonder if simply schedule-wise if they’ll ever be able to make another series again.
The Sherlock Holmes short story “The Final Problem” has, of course, already inspired one episode of Sherlock, the series two finale “The Reichenbach Fall”. It’s the short story in which Sir Arthur Conan Doyle introduced Moriarty and then killed off both him and Holmes; he originally intended it to be the last ever Sherlock Holmes story. Instead, fan pressure forced him to resurrect the Great Detective.
So read into the use of that title what you will…
Sherlock Holmes “The Final Problem” airs on BBC One on Sunday 15 January.
