Sources close to the production of ABC’s The Inhumans TV series for ABC have leaked some casting character notes to That Hashtag Show which confirm that the show will concentrate on the Inhumans royal family – all of whom have been central to the Inhumans since they were first introduced in Fantastic Four #45 (1965)*.
(* Medusa and Gorgon had actually both appeared in earlier issues – #36 and #44, respectively – but #45 was the first time the Inhumans appeared as a group.)
The casting notes use code names for the characters but for anyone who knows the Inhumans from the Marvel comics universe it’s easy enough to work out who they’re referring to.
However, in this day and age, with diversity is such an issue in US TV and filmmaking, we’re slightly surprises to see how many of the casting notes specify caucasian and none of them specifying other racial backgrounds. Why the need to specify at all? There’s no reason why Black Bolt, Medusa, Maximus, etc, could’t be black, or Asian, or Hispanic or Indian or Mauri or whatever. Surely the roles should simply go the best actors?
Anyway, here goes…
BRODERICK: Male. 30-40. Caucasian. Can say volumes with just a look. Strong, thoughtful and private, he’s unaccustomed to being questioned or feeling a need to answer to anyone, to an extent can verge on arrogance. SERIES REGULAR, AEP.
This’ll be Black Bolt, king of the Inhumans, usually silent but voilent when he does speak. His “voice” creates large scale destruction. Even a whisper can knock down walls
MARJORIE: Female. 30-40. Caucasian. An elegant and intelligent advisor to her husband, she struggles to find her place outside of their relationship, as others tend to view her as just a pretty face. Strong and resourceful, she’s not afraid to break the rules when the situation demands it. SERIES REGULAR, AEP.
This one’s Medusa, wife to Black Bolt, who has prehensile hair, that can also magically grow.
MARTY: Male. 30-40. Caucasian. Broderick’s younger brother; he is intelligent, charming and articulate. He comes across as a man of the people but secretly covets power. SERIES REGULAR, AEP.
Marty is Maximus – the rotten egg of the group. Also known as Maximus the Mad, he has mind control powers and is bascially Loki take 2.
KEVIN: Male. 30-40. Open. Slight of build, his mind is his greatest asset. Always prepared with a plan, his outlook on life is the glass is always half-empty and often cracked and dirty as well. Though his outlook can be grim he has a droll, dry sense of humour. SERIES REGULAR, AEP.
Although not as immediately obvious as some of the others this is almost definitely Karnak, Black Bolt’s cousin and younger brother to Triton. He’s got superhuman strength, endurance, and speed and he can spot and exploit the weakness in any object. In the early days of the comics he did this by karate-chopping said objects at their weakspots.
GRADY: Male. 25-35. Open. Impetuous and brash, he has serious impulse control issues which frequently get him into trouble, whether it’s women, booze or fighting. He loves life and lives in the moment for better or worse. SERIES REGULAR, AEP.
This’ll be Gorgon, another cousin of Black Bolt’s. He can create earthquakes just by stomping his hooflike feet.
CHRISTINE: Female. 18-25 to play 18. Caucasian. Soulful but still learning the ways of the world, she has the arrogance of youth. Impetuous and independent, she is also deeply devoted to her family. SERIES REGULAR, AEP.
AKA Crystal, Medusa’s younger sister. She can manipulate the four elements (air, earth, wind, and fire). The Human Torch was her boyfriend for a long while, though we doubt he’ll be making a guest appearance.
TIMOTHY: Male. 25-35. Open. SFXMU required. Supremely athletic. The ultimate picture of cool. He’s calm under pressure and willing to do anything to get the job done.
“SFXMU” means special effects make up, so it looks like whoever’s cast as Triton will be getting to work earlier than the rest of the cast. Triton, yet another cousin of Black Bolt and the brother of Karnak is like a more fishy looking Aquaman or a cooler version of Abe Sapien.
