Kimi no Na wa – aka Your Name in English – has now officially outgrossed Spirited Away, the become the most financially successful anime film in history. So far it has made over $290 million at the global box office.
Most of the money came from Japan, where the film has made $192.5 million, and is currently the third highest grossing film of all time in Japan. The film has also been massively popular in China, where it has made a further $81 million, making it the highest grossing Japanese film in China ever. The South Koreans are loving it too.
Kimi no Na Wa is a contemporary tale of two characters who live very different lives: Mitsuha who’s a girl from a rural town in the mountains and Taki a boy from downtown Tokyo. One month after a comet has falls on Japan, both characters have dreams about living each other’s lives… The movie is directed by Makoto Shinkai (Voices Of A Distant Star). It has been submitted as a nominee for Best Animated Feature at the upcoming Oscars.
