While filming continues in Sydney, Australia for Pacific Rim: Uprising under the directorship of Steven S DeKnight (Spartacus: Blood & Sand, Daredevil season one) – and BUZZ continues to sulk because they changed the name from the much more interesting Pacific Rim: Maelstrom – production company Legendary has been busy making money out of the new movie even before tickets have gone on sale – by selling the licensing rights.
And so in the latest issue of License! Global, we get a preview for Pacific Rim; Uprising featuring artwork for the design for three of the film’s redesigned Jaegers, the franchise’s giant mechs. Although the article doesn’t name any names, one of them (the blue one) could be the new-look Gipsy Danger from the first film.
The new designs certainly look sleeker and leaner than the Jaegers from the first movie; dare we say, almost a bit Transformers-like, which may not be a good thing – you don’t want audiences thinking Uprising is just a Transformers rip-off (the first film was much more fun than that). On the other hand, they look designed to move a bit faster, which may be a response to criticisms from some quarters that the mech/kaiju fights in the first movie were a little sluggish (BUZZ actually liked the deliberately stylised fights, but it seemed to really annoy some people).
Legendary’s Pacific Rim: Uprising stars John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Jing Tian, Wesley Wong, Lily Ji, Chen Zitong, Lan Yingying, Qian Yongchen, and Zhang Jin, with cameos by Xiao Yang and Korean actor Kim Jeong-Hoon. It is currently scheduled for a February 2018 release. Guillermo del Toro, director of the first film, is acting as producer this time around.
