Producer Adi Shankar has shared the first official promo image for Netflix’s highly anticipated new animated series Castlevania, based on the ancient, revered Nintendo game NES vampire-hunting game that first came out in 1986. Netflix has ordered two seasons of the show, the first of which will premiere later this year (exact date tbc), the second coming in 2018.
Shankar, who is producing the Castlevania along with Fred Seibert and Kevin Klonde, has promised a “super violent” version of the story, about a vampire hunter called Simon Belmont. His choice of scriptwriter would seem to back up that boast; it’s notorious maverick comic scribe Warren Ellis, creator of the “edgy” Transmetropolitan and Planetary.
“It’s going to be dark, satirical, and after a decade of propaganda it will flip the vampire sub-genre on its head,” said Shankar last year.
Earlier this month he added, “I personally guarantee that it will end the streak and be the western world’s first good video game adaptation.” Now that’s a hell of a boast to live up to.
