Manga Entertainment has announced the UK cinematic release date for anime blockbuster In This Corner Of The World – 30 June, with special previews from 28 June.
From acclaimed director Sunao Katabuchi, In This Corner Of The World is a heart-warming and inspirational tale of the everyday challenges faced by Japanese people in spite of a violent, war-torn climate. It has been described as, “a wistfully nostalgic time capsule,” by Variety.
The film has been a huge critical success in Japan where it’s won 22 awards, including the Hiroshima Peace Film Award.
“This truly is a unique and exquisite film, and we are incredibly proud to be involved with it,” says Andrew Hewson, marketing manager at Manga Entertainment. “In This Corner Of The World has been doing phenomenally well in Japan since opening last year and we have high hopes that UK audiences will connect with this captivating masterpiece as much as they did!”
From, Sunao Katabuchi, the director of Mai Mai Miracle and the producers of Millennium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers, In This Corner Of The World is based on the original work by Fumiyo Kouno. The story follows a young woman calleded Suzu Urano, who in 1944 moves to the small town of Kure in Hiroshima to live with her husband’s family. Suzu’s life is thrown into chaos when her town is bombed during World War II. Her perseverance and courage underpin this heart-warming and inspirational tale of the everyday challenges faced by the Japanese in the midst of a violent, war-torn country. This beautiful yet poignant tale shows that even in the face of adversity and loss, people can come together and rebuild their lives.
Director Katabuchi began his career working closely with Hayao Miyazaki before directing his own animated films.
In This Corner Of The World became the sleeper hit of 2016 in Japan. Independently produced and only opening on 80 screens with very little publicity, the film went on to gross more than $20 million and remained in the top 10 for over four months, and is still currently playing in over cinemas.
