Junichi Tachibana has spent the past two years in romantic turmoil. After being stood up by the girl of his dreams on Christmas Eve, the courageous young high schooler finds himself in a dry spell fitting of the Sahara Desert. Luckily, there are plenty of fish left in the sea – and Junichi appears to be the perfect kind of bait.
Based on the popular PSP dating simulator of the same name, Amagami SS is an adorable romantic comedy that doles out cutesy laughs on a regular basis. It’s wonderfully paced, giving four episodes to each heroine as they inevitably fall in love with our resident stud. Told through a series of short stories, just enough time is given to each girl as their relationship blossoms into a brief yet beautiful affair.
The general format of each tale is expectedly generic. Junichi clumsily befriends his crush before blurting out a ham-fisted confession. Granted, it’s somewhat predictable… but it’s not a million miles away from a real-life romance, either! Viewers will also find plenty of waifu material across the mostly likeable cast. You can also look forward to plenty of heart-warming conversations and a splashing of dates across a peaceful winter setting.
Amagami SS isn’t the perfect romcom, mind. Each arc is only given a handful of episodes to shine, ditching character depth in favour of succinct resolution. However, as standalone outings they deliver more than enough lovingly-crafted laughs, confessions and schmaltzy hand-holding to keep you invested. Oh, and Kaoru is best girl. Reviewed by Jordan King
