Coatsink has established itself in the world of virtual reality with two entries in the telekinetic puzzle-adventure series, Esper. So Augmented Empire, a cyberpunk turn-based strategy game, makes for a fascinating change of pace.
You’ll command a small group of agents as they get into scrapes with some of the more untoward elements on the island of New Savannah, including the criminals and gangs that rule the slums in the classist ‘three-tier’ city.
Understandably, Augmented Empire plays like a much simpler and less in-depth spin on the genre, but is nonetheless more than capable. Commands are input by simply tapping the side of the Gear VR, although controller support is also planned. A neat touch is the addition of a skill bar that can be stopped in the sweet spot to deal more damage or dodge attacks, negating some of the infuriating randomness of a game like XCOM.
Augmented Empire will also be a fully-fledged eight-hour game, and should serve as an excellent example of VR’s potential outside of the first-person perspective. Previewed by James Pickard
