Devolver Digital publishing a violent, top-down shooter in which you can thwack goons over the head with a pipe in bloody and brutal combat? No, this isn’t Hotline Miami 3. However, fans of Dennaton’s series might also find something to like in Ruiner.
Set in a grotty cyberpunk future where humans are as much machines as they are flesh and blood, you play an unfortunate soul who has been hacked and forced into the role of a hitman in order to save his brother. Midway through the job, though, the hack is reversed and you are set upon a path of vengeance to save your sibling.
To do that you’ll return to the aforementioned clattering of steel pipes and skulls. The action in Ruiner is fast and frenetic as you rush through the dingy and neon-lit locales of Rengkok, battering or shooting through the waves of foes standing in your way.
Along with melee weapons and a range of firearms, you have access to a number of skills and powers in combat. For example, a basic dash can help you dodge projectiles, while an energy shield can absorb any bullets fired your way. Abilities can also be combined – you can dash at enemies with your energy shield raised to dramatically electrify them.
It makes for a lively and exciting combat system even in these basic early levels, and shows potential for even more spark as you acquire more deadly gadgets and abilities later on. When you add the anarchic tone and bouts of exploration in the cyberpunk city, Ruiner is an undoubtedly intriguing prospect. Previewed by James Pickard
