The war between Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison for control of the future of electricity is one of those stories that’s wound inextricably through science fiction. Tesla is the archetypal ‘mad scientist’ and has been a beloved go to for so many TV shows, books and films over the years. His life, and his clash with Edison, is fascinating and well worth digging into but if you want a great fictional primer? Go for The Prestige. Not only one of the best movies made in the last thirty years but one of the best novels too.
The Current War is due out in November and looks set to give the story a little historical precedent. What’s especially interesting is that Tesla is a wild card here, introduced only after the conflict between Edison and Gas magnate Henry Westinghouse escalates. It looks great, and this sort of ‘eve of innovation’ story always makes for a fun movie. Plus the cast is ridiculously good with Benedict Cumberbatch as Edison, Michael Shannon as Westinghouse, Nicholas Hoult as Tesla and Katherine Waterston, Tom Holland and Tuppence Middleton also all present. It’s out on 24 November and we can’t wait.
