Todd Haynes’ Wonderstruck premiered at the Cannes Film Festival back in May and has received some huge praise after playing at the Melbourne International Film Festival in Australia and Telluride Film Festival in the US. Now Amazon Studios and Roadside Attractions have released the full trailer.
Based on Brian Selznick’s novel (who also adapted his book for the screen), the film follows Ben (Oakes Fegley) and Rose (Millicent Simmonds), two children from different time periods. In 1977, Ben has lost his mother, and then loses his hearing in a freak electrical accident. He then discovers a note which might lead him to his long-lost father. In 1927, Rose is hearing impaired and passes her time dreaming of silent movie star Lillian Mayhew (Julianne Moore), whose life she chronicles in a scrapbook. They both set out on a trip to New York to find what they are missing.
The trailer shows how despite being 50 years apart, both Ben and Rose’s paths intertwine… playing to the sounds of David Bowie’s Space Oddity. Also included is a version of the trailer with open captions, introduced by actress Millicent Simmonds.
Wonderstruck also stars Jaden Michael, Michelle Williams and James Urbaniak. It will play at the London Film Festival and New York Film Festival this October before opening in the US on 20 October. It currently does not have a UK release date.
