What is the secret of King Midas, we hear you ask? Well, obviously he could turn things to gold using nothing more than his mitts, and this Spanish ’toon follows an amateur archaeologist named Tad who wants to rustle up the same magic for himself. He joins another historian named Sara – who he fell madly in love with in the first Tad movie from 2012 (you didn’t see it? It seems nobody did, outside of Spain) – and many globe-trotting, tomb-raiding, temple-robbing adventures ensue.
Even though there’s no denying it can be quite amusing at times, this still isn’t great. Barring a few nice touches (mostly scenery), the animation’s only passable, while the villain, central love story and plotting are all lazily executed. Or perhaps we’re being unnecessarily cruel, and are just too used to the hyper-workshopped, hyper-expensive likes of Disney/Pixar? Only tolerable if you’re willing to relax those standards.
