Blumhouse Productions make them cheap and rake in the profits, having turned the likes of Paranormal Activity, The Purge and Insidious into successful franchises. As a part of its BH Tilt label comes the first trailer for the sci-fi comedy horror Upgrade.
With shades of Black Mirror, the film is written and directed by Leigh Whannell, writer of Saw and Insidious, and director of Insidious: Chapter 3. After an encounter with four men, Grey Trace (Logan Marshall-Green) loses his wife Asha (Melanie Vallejo) and is left paralysed. A technophobe, he agrees to have an experimental STEM chip implanted if it will allow him the opportunity to take revenge. However, the chip proves to do a lot more than just curing Grey’s paralysis.
Blumhouse have released green band and slightly more gory red band trailers for your viewing pleasure. We see Grey conversing with his STEM chip as they both set to work on exacting revenge on the people that killed Asha, with inventive fight sequences and Grey boasting about being a ninja.
Upgrade initially premiered at SXSW in the Midnight section, gaining significant buzz. It also stars Betty Gabriel, Harrison Gilbertson and Benedict Hardie. Upgrade is set to open in the US on 1 June 2018.
