Sony has released a new Venom trailer for the highly-anticipated comic book adaptation…and we actually get to see the Venom character this time around. Based on the Marvel Comics character, this is directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) and stars Tom Hardy as a reporter named Eddie Brock who becomes infected with an alien symbiote that turns him into a very different kind of person.
For those who don’t know, in the comics Spider-Man comes into contact with an alien symbiote that gives him special powers like increased strength and unlimited web-fluid. However, it also causes increased aggression. When Spider-Man gets rid of the symbiote, it finds his rival Eddie Brock, latches onto him, and Brock becomes Venom, which is why Venom has Spider-Man’s powers and resembles a grotesque version of the webslinger.
The technically non-canon movie Spider-Man 3 (2007), starring Tobey Maguire had the Eddie Brock/Venom character, played by Topher Grace, as a villain and it loosely followed the same origin story.
Since Sony’s Spider-Man exists inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Marvel Studios has no involvement, they’re keeping things separate for now and just making a Venom movie with Eddie Brock as the protagonist. It’s certainly a lot better than the last trailer.
The filmmakers cite the Venom comic storylines “Lethal Protector” (Venom becomes a vigilante guardian hero for San Francisco) and “Planet of the Symbiotes” (Earth is invaded by an army of symbiotes) as an influence on the film.
Hardy has had some hit-and-miss success with different accents on film. His Welsh accent in Locke (2013) slipped into East-London-Indian-restaurant-owner on more than one occasion, but his Brooklyn accent in The Drop (2014) was excellent. However, we have no clue what accent he’s going for in this movie.
Joining Hardy is Michelle Williams, Woody Harrelson and possibly Tom Holland.
Venom opens in theatres on October 5, 2018.
