After teasing us back in March, Square Enix has unveiled the full trailer for Shadow of the Tomb Raider – and Lara is looking in particularly good murderous form.
As we gather from the video, the third entry in the latest trilogy will send Lara off to an all-new jungle environment where she’ll have to save the world from a Mayan apocalypse. Wait, is this 2012 again?
Anyway, she’ll have to go digging around the ruins of ancient civilisations and killing everyone in her path once more to stop it. We don’t see much of the former in the trailer, but there’s a lot of the latter and there are some serious Batman vibes in the way she dispatches an entire unit of enemy soldiers.
The official tagline being thrown around is: “Become the Tomb Raider”. To be honest, we’re not sure what the last two games have been about if this is the one where Lara is finally “forged into the Tomb Raider she is destined to be”. Unless that’s a homicidal maniac who is feared by everyone or everything she meets. Hmm, maybe that’s right.
In any case, put us down as cautiously optimistic for this one. The previous two games have been solid action-adventure games that have tried to do something new with the character of Lara Croft. It’ll be interesting to see how the new game stands up against this year’s phenomenal God of War, though.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be released on September 14th for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
