It’s a shōnen showdown this week as new contender Black Clover goes up against a classic combo of One Piece and Naruto Shippuden. Released by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment in a joint DVD and Blu-ray set, the debut volume of fantasy series Black Clover follows the adventures of teen orphan Asta, who sets out to become the Wizard King …despite not being able to actually use magic.
Produced by Studio Pierrot (Tokyo Ghoul, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations) and directed by Monster Musume’s Tatsuya Yoshihara, the 10-episode Black Clover Season One, Part One sees Asta come into possession of the legendary five-leaf clover grimoire after rescuing his best bud and wizarding rival Yuno from a robber. The mysterious tome grants our hero access to beefy anti-magic powers, enabling him to take on the most formidable spell-slingers in the land despite his innate lack of magical ability.
As young Asta gets to grips with his new grimoire, two iconic anime action stars take to the stage courtesy of Manga Entertainment, with super shinobi Naruto facing dire peril in Naruto Shippuden Box Set 33 and rubber-limbed pirate Luffy busting into prison for One Piece Collection 18.
Featuring episodes 416-430, the latest instalment of Naruto Shippuden opens with both Naruto and Sasuke at death’s door, while Kakashi and the reformed Obito try to prevent a powered-up Madara from activating the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Meanwhile, One Piece Collection 18 sees Luffy and the busty Boa Hancock sneak into the underwater prison of Impel Down to rescue Ace. But is Luffy reckoning without Chief Warden Magellan and his ultra-toxic poison powers?
This week’s new releases are rounded-off by Anime Limited, whose Sword Art Online II: Part 4 comes to standard Blu-ray today following its DVD and Collector’s Edition premiere back in June. Containing episodes 20-24, this final volume of SAO’s second season wraps up the ‘Mother’s Rosario’ arc.
